Earth Day and Organic Flowers

San Francisco, CA (April 11, 2005): Consumers enthusiastically embrace organic foods and, according to entrepreneur Gerald Prolman, consumers can now enjoy the natural beauty of organic flowers too.

The U.S. organic market is estimated to grow to more than $30 billion by 2007. Prolman, whose Internet eco-florist Organic Bouquet, Inc. (www.OrganicBouquet.com) is considered the pioneer of the eco-flower market, is quick to point out that “there’s more to organic than food.”

Indeed, U.S. sales of organic flowers in 2003 grew 52 percent, to $8 million. Sales are expected to grow 13 percent annually through 2008, according to the Organic Trade Association.

Organic floral is the newest category in the $230 billion LOHAS market (Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability) in which there are reportedly 50 million Americans who make environmentally based purchasing decisions.

“Organic flowers are grown in an environmental farming system that builds rich, fertile soil and utilizes natural defense mechanisms to combat pests, rather than synthetic chemicals,” said Prolman. “Care for the environment through sustainable farming is what Earth Day is all about.”

Prolman, building on a successful career in the organic food business, founded Organic Bouquet in 2001, creating the first organic online floral alternative in the $16+ billion international floral industry. He works with farmers from around the world, including Ecuadorian rose farmer Dr. Hernan Chiriboga, who runs the world’s first commercial-scale organic rose operation.

“Our organic farming practices ensure that our precious resources, the soil and the water, are protected,” said Chiriboga, who until recently served as president of Ecuador’s flower exporters association.

Organic Bouquet markets environmentally friendly flowers to upscale retailers, including select Whole Foods Markets – the nation’s leading retailer of organic foods and products – and ships fresh cut organic flowers from its earth-friendly farms directly to consumers via the Internet.

“Our flowers have a deeper layer of beauty that comes from knowing that the growers, the land and the environment are all treated with respect,” said Prolman.
